School Travel Survey Analysis and Reporting

Manchester City Council is currently assisting its schools to prepare School Travel Plans. Manchester’s School Travel Co-ordinators undertake travel surveys where pupils complete questionnaires about their travel to and from school. In most schools pupils also mark their routes to school on a map.

extract from mapForecasting and Analytical Services (FAS) then process and analyse the returned questionnaires, entering home location and route information onto our MapInfo based Geographic Information System. For each school we produce a report that includes:

  • maps showing the distribution of pupils’ home locations and mode of travel to school

  • maps showing the routes pupils take to school, and how many pupils use each route

  • a summary of pupil responses to all the questions about their journey

  • a modal split of journeys to and from school

  • a map and analysis of child pedestrian collisions around the school (based on the database of road collisions which FAS hold for Greater Manchester).

FAS have also produced similar reports for schools in several other districts of Greater Manchester and have developed procedures to enable us to produce such reports to short timescales.

View a sample map (pdf format 480Kb). Note that the width of the shaded area is proportional to the number of students walking that route.
